The 2.0 duratec is a very very near square setup which is optimal for a forced induction setup. Whereas the 2.3 (and 2.5 which is even worse), is out of square, because it's a "stroker" version of the 2.0 liter, meaning the rods have to be longer, which simultaneously give those engines more power and more torque at the cost of a weaker rod and crank setup.

The engine is not new but it was updated and upgraded to fit the new role. Though, it's still the good old Duratec that is not going to break often.

Any engine that isn't maintained properly will end up being a "bad engine". The 24V DOHC is a very long lived and reliable engine, and was/is used in many different Ford and Mazda vehicles. 5.0. Nov 25, 2020. #2. Personally I think any 3.0 will do you just fine. There are two major things to watch for - cam synchronizer failure, usually you hear a "chirping" noise when the engine is running, and rust/brown goo in the radiator. Ranger and Taurus 3.0s are notorious for some kind of chemical reaction in the cooling system that clogs
